Sumerian Architecture

Palaces
The King, his family and his servants would all live in Palaces that were located in the heart of the city. They were constructed out of mud-brick and included a storage unit that would store items collected as tax.

Ziggurats
Step pyramids built by the Sumerians. They were simply just levels of platforms stacked to create a massive, solid structure. Unlike the conventional pyramid, Ziggurats had a flat top to them. They were built as a religious structure that would allow the Sumerians to be closer to God by climbing the pyramid.

Housing
The poor built houses out of reeds, but would soon perish. The average house was quite small, made out of mud brick, mud plaster, and wooden doors. Wood was somewhat scarce in this region though. The courtyard style was quite popular with Sumerian architects.
